AI Simulation Gives People a Peek of Their Potential Future Self

In a preliminary user research study, the scientists discovered that after interacting with Future You for about half an hour, people reported decreased stress and anxiety and felt a stronger sense of connection with their future selves.

“We do not have an actual time machine yet, however AI can be a type of virtual time machine. We can use this simulation to help individuals think more about the consequences of the options they are making today,” states Pat Pataranutaporn, a current Media Lab doctoral graduate who is actively establishing a program to advance human-AI interaction research at MIT, and co-lead author of a paper on Future You.

Pataranutaporn is signed up with on the paper by co-lead authors Kavin Winson, a scientist at KASIKORN Labs; and Peggy Yin, a Harvard University undergraduate; along with Auttasak Lapapirojn and Pichayoot Ouppaphan of KASIKORN Labs; and senior authors Monchai Lertsutthiwong, head of AI research study at the KASIKORN Business-Technology Group; Pattie Maes, the Germeshausen Professor of Media, Arts, and Sciences and head of the Fluid Interfaces group at MIT, and Hal Hershfield, professor of marketing, behavioral choice making, and psychology at the University of California at Los Angeles. The research study will be presented at the IEEE Conference on Frontiers in Education.

A reasonable simulation

Studies about conceptualizing one’s future self return to a minimum of the 1960s. One early method targeted at enhancing future self-continuity had individuals write letters to their future selves. More recently, scientists used virtual truth safety glasses to help individuals imagine future variations of themselves.

But none of these methods were very interactive, limiting the impact they could have on a user.

With the introduction of generative AI and large language designs like ChatGPT, the scientists saw an opportunity to make a simulated future self that could discuss somebody’s real objectives and goals during a normal conversation.

“The system makes the simulation really realistic. Future You is much more detailed than what a person could create by just picturing their future selves,” says Maes.

Users begin by answering a series of questions about their existing lives, things that are essential to them, and objectives for the future.

The AI system uses this info to produce what the researchers call “future self memories” which provide a backstory the model pulls from when communicating with the user.

For example, the chatbot might discuss the highlights of somebody’s future profession or response concerns about how the user conquered a particular difficulty. This is possible because ChatGPT has been trained on comprehensive information involving individuals talking about their lives, careers, and great and bad experiences.

The user engages with the tool in 2 ways: through introspection, when they consider their life and objectives as they build their future selves, and retrospection, when they contemplate whether the simulation shows who they see themselves becoming, states Yin.

“You can think of Future You as a story search space. You have an opportunity to hear how a few of your experiences, which may still be emotionally charged for you now, could be metabolized throughout time,” she says.

To assist individuals picture their future selves, the system creates an age-progressed photo of the user. The chatbot is likewise developed to offer vibrant responses utilizing phrases like “when I was your age,” so the simulation feels more like a real future version of the individual.

The ability to take recommendations from an older variation of oneself, rather than a generic AI, can have a stronger positive influence on a user pondering an uncertain future, Hershfield states.

“The interactive, brilliant elements of the platform give the user an anchor point and take something that could result in nervous rumination and make it more concrete and productive,” he includes.

But that realism could backfire if the simulation relocates a negative instructions. To prevent this, they make sure Future You cautions users that it shows just one prospective version of their future self, and they have the company to change their lives. Providing alternate answers to the survey yields an absolutely various conversation.

“This is not a prophesy, however rather a possibility,” Pataranutaporn states.

Aiding self-development

To evaluate Future You, they carried out a user study with 344 people. Some users interacted with the system for 10-30 minutes, while others either connected with a generic chatbot or just completed surveys.

who used Future You were able to develop a closer relationship with their ideal future selves, based upon an analytical analysis of their reactions. These users likewise reported less stress and anxiety about the future after their interactions. In addition, Future You users said the conversation felt genuine which their worths and beliefs appeared constant in their simulated future identities.

“This work creates a new path by taking a well-established psychological technique to visualize times to come – an avatar of the future self – with cutting edge AI. This is precisely the type of work academics should be focusing on as innovation to construct virtual self designs merges with big language models,” states Jeremy Bailenson, the Thomas More Storke Professor of Communication at Stanford University, who was not involved with this research study.

Building off the outcomes of this initial user study, the scientists continue to fine-tune the methods they develop context and prime users so they have conversations that help construct a stronger sense of future self-continuity.

“We wish to guide the user to discuss particular topics, rather than asking their future selves who the next president will be,” Pataranutaporn says.

They are also adding safeguards to avoid individuals from misusing the system. For instance, one might think of a company developing a “future you” of a possible client who attains some fantastic outcome in life because they acquired a particular product.

Progressing, the researchers desire to study particular applications of Future You, possibly by making it possible for people to explore various professions or envision how their daily options could affect climate modification.

They are likewise gathering information from the Future You pilot to better comprehend how people utilize the system.

“We do not want people to become reliant on this tool. Rather, we hope it is a meaningful experience that assists them see themselves and the world differently, and helps with self-development,” Maes states.
